On seeing a photo of me, she said, “I don’t like that one, it doesn’t begin to look like you.” And then she hesitated, looked at me, and said, “Only when somebody can see you, can they see how beautiful you are.” The photo was a raw, no make-up selfie. There was a time when I would have cared. And there was a time when I would have felt a little pang with Mom’s comment, maybe a time when she wouldn’t have added the second one. But not now. And I’m a grateful little girl.
