Our minds allow us to intellectualize the truth, our senses allow us to see and touch some elements of the truth. But there are elements of the truth that we cannot rationalize, or see, or touch.

We must feel them … and to do that, we use what some would call our hearts.

Imagine a room with God in it. There is a huge window into the room and God is wired; he can be seen and heard. Several people stand at the window. Each is asked to explain God.

One describes with impeccable detail what God looks like. Another describes the audible breathing heard from the room, analyzing the intensity, the calmness, and a sigh . Still another theorizes what God’s purpose is for visiting the room.

Another, sitting silently with his eyes closed, realizes that there is a door between him and God, and that it was intended to be used. And what he feels when he opens the door cannot be experienced through the window. Neither can it be passed on to the others. They must experience it for themselves! 

Mysticism (exemplified by Christ, Buddha, and every great spiritual teacher) requires that we go inward, that we venture through the door to spirit and experience God personally.… More

Eighteen years ago, I declared Sunday to be my “sabbath.” I wanted to breathe, to be still, to listen, to refuel, to gather the at-risk fragments of me. I wanted to let solitude center me so I could try my wings again.

Today, we are part of a global society that needs a “sabbath.” We’ve known this, but we needed a nudge. We needed a wave that would start somewhere and move to alert everybody and unify us as one. The corona virus is our nudge.

We will survive. And in the process, we will also renew our compassion, our wisdom, our strength, our ingenuity, our faith, and our courage to act.

The quest, however epic, is ours. We are intended to be the hero … and the keeper of the sabbath. … More
