Mom has been with me for two years today. And I’m so grateful. She has worked hard and, at 93, “far exceeded all expectations.” Reward keeps pace with effort. What I’m most grateful for, though, is that I love Mom from a purer place than I ever have. The effort to do that started more than 25 years ago as I faced childhood wounds and tried to heal them.

Last night as I was telling Mom I loved her, I saw our reflection in the mirror. I liked it and asked John to join us and take a photo. Life is way cool. And I am way grateful to be living this kind of love. Mom is, too. When I told her that I loved her from a purer place than I ever had, she said, “And vice versa.” She paused and then said, “Now, about the hoot owl?” That’s a private joke and another story, another memory.… More
