Sometimes our choices seem black and white. We can almost see a halo on one shoulder battling with horns on the other. But there are times when we’re sincerely trying to decide what’s “right” and what’s “wrong,” what’s loving and what’s not.
One way of getting clarity is to ask, “What do I WANT to do?” Oddly enough, that’s not an obvious question. We’ve spent a lifetime thinking about what we SHOULD do.
Love is wholehearted, though. It acts out of desire, not duty. And if that seems like a stretch to you, let me refer you to one of my all-time favorite books written by one of my all-time favorite, brilliant minds … “The Art of Loving” by Erich Fromm. Fromm explains that love responds out of desire, not obligation.
We are intended to align with our essence of love. And that means that doing so feels like self-verification. It feels good! Let’s revel in the feel-good of love. And let’s share that with others. Let’s show them a happy face, rather than a resentful one. Let’s show them what love looks like.
